best lunch ever!

image1371833977.jpgThe Pepper something - I can't recall the name of the place. Best freaking meal I have had in ages - possibly one of the best lunches I have ever had. We started with raw beef salad - raw beef in fresh lime juice with an assortment of fresh herbs, sour fruits and leafy greens that you wrap in rice paper. Oh my god - so good and so fresh that it brought tears to my eyes. I then had carmalized pork and Chesney had a sweet potato and chicken curry. Best pork I have ever had! No seriously - after eating all the pork we ordered more rice just so that we had an excus to finish off all the sauce. For those of you that have had my vodka - it wa the same carmelized sauce I use to make the vodka - only like a million times better. Chesney had the most beautiful curry ever. Light and delicate - you could taste every single spice in it. Refreshing and so amazing. Best lunch ever!

night market

image917692030.jpgWe showed up at the restaurant at the agreed upon time and i spun a set for the restless tourists. A crazed, wilded eyes bunch of middle aged European tourists. We attempted another meal but failed - it was horrible. Shimp should not be mushy!

So off to the fabled Night Market! The land of dangerous food, crazed locals and fat waddling tourists.

Hmmmm a bit smaller than expected - about 30 stalls - mainly food. We tried a couple - some good and some not so good. I braved the locally brewed rice wine which was about like drinking paint thinner - except thicker.

We have a new plan of attack for our next visit to the market. Good food will be had!

The quest begins

image922465218.jpgMonday morning we awoke at the crack of dawn and prepared for our grand quest - food an fire. Our dinner last night at the Cottage was less than amazing so we were determined to have so good local eats plus we needed to get some fuel for fire spinning. We figured out that it is about a 40 minute walk to town - most of it along a beautiful white sand beach (life is so dificult). Granted it was 85 degrees out so I was a sweaty mess by the time we arrived at civilization. We located one of the suggested local pho establishments and eagerly ordered 2 bowls of the delightful soup. Our order of two beers resulted in an older fellow running next door and buying them for us (note to self - simply buy beers before getting food). The pho was good but not mind blowing.

Having sated our growling stomachs we started the search for fuel of fire spinning. This is perhaps one of the most difficult things to convey when you do not speak the language. Normal tourist don't go around asking to buy a liter of lamp oil or kerosene. After about 5 very confusing conversations we finally gave up and returned to our hotel.

Once back we were resting on our patio when the manager wandered past and asked if we needed anything. So I asked her if she knew where I could get so fuel. One thing led to another and not only did she get me some fuel - she also agreed to comp us dinner every night that I spun fire for the dinner guests. Too bad the restaurant sucks :(.

first noodles!

image282995318.jpgOur first bowl of pho. Not bad for airport food. We are getting a quick lunch while we wait for the last leg of our trip - a twin prop airplane to Phu Quac.

the first leg

image2092960791.jpgWe just arrived at the Taiwan airport and sadly don't have enough time to grab a bowl of noodles and dim sum before our flight to Hi Chi Mign City. I so love flying non-American airlines. The food is always better and the movie selection is way more interesting.

Food52

Just ran across this the other day - looks like a really neat idea. Will have to keep an eye on it and see how the recipes come out.

Butternut Squash Soup

A tangy, wonderful soup. This is the first soup that converted me over to thick, warming veggie based soups. I love to make this during the late fall and winter. It has a 'bright' flavor that seems almost cheery to me.

Chicken Pho

Looks like a good Pho recipe. I'm a beef Pho lover but I have some friends that only eat chicken (the poor fools).

Itkman Cooking

Another Youtube cooking show. Quick, easy, cheap meals.
